The Story Behind Coterie: From Dream to Reality (Or How I Accidentally Created the Coziest Chaos in West Chester)

Hey there, beautiful humans!
So, you want to know how Coterie Lounge & Cafe came to be? Buckle up, because this story involves a Dominican mom, a lot of coffee-fueled dreams, and me somehow convincing people that combining a salon and cafe was totally normal. Spoiler alert: it's been the most beautiful mess I've ever created.
Let me start with this - I've been lucky my whole life. Like, weirdly lucky. The kind of lucky where things just seem to fall into place when I need them most. But this? This little corner of West Chester magic? This took some serious manifesting, a few breakdowns, a divorce and more coffee than any human should consume.
The "Why" Behind the Chaos
Picture this: I'm a cosmetologist with 18+ years of experience, watching my clients sit in salon chairs talking about needing a place to just... exist. A place to work, to connect, to feel like they belong somewhere. Meanwhile, I'm over here thinking about how much I love creating spaces where people feel seen and heard.
Then it hit me - what if we didn't have to choose? What if you could get your hair done AND grab an amazing latte? What if there was a place that felt like your friend's living room, but with better coffee and the occasional open mic night?
My family thought I was crazy. "Ghio," my Dominican mom would say "you want to do WHAT now?" I was already invested! I didn't know or think I'd be divorced two weeks before opening the doors to Coterie. We planned and worked together with twice the income, to open when I did, little did I know life had other plans! But here's the thing about being first-generation American - you learn early that sometimes the craziest ideas are the ones worth chasing.
The Vision Gets Real
Fast forward through months of planning, paperwork that made my head spin, and me googling "how to run a business" more times than I care to admit. June 2024 rolls around, and suddenly we're opening our doors at 8870 Cincinnati Dayton Road.
The concept? Simple but revolutionary (at least in my mind): Come for the coffee, stay for the community. Need your curls refreshed? I've got you covered at Bounce Salon. Want to host your book club or baby shower? Our community room is waiting. Craving that perfect latte while you work on your novel? Grab a corner spot and let the 90s nostalgia fuel your creativity.
What Makes Us Different
Look, I could tell you about our Seven Hills coffee or our perfectly curated gift shop (shoutout to Naomi for keeping that organized). But honestly? It's the feeling you get when you walk in. It's Alexis greeting you like family, it's the way conversations happen naturally between strangers, it's the fact that our open mic nights run a little long because everyone's having too much fun to leave.
We're not trying to be the fanciest spot in town. We're trying to be the realest. The place where you can bring your laptop and actually get work done, where your kids are welcome, where your hair gets the love it deserves, and where Monday doesn't feel quite so Monday-ish. (on account of us being closed on Mondays lol)
The Beautiful Chaos Continues
Here we are, over a year later, and I'm still figuring it out as I go. Some days I'm behind the espresso machine, other days I'm cutting hair, and most days I'm doing both while trying to remember if I ordered enough oat milk for the week. It's chaotic, it's exhausting, and it's absolutely perfect.
Because at the end of the day, Coterie isn't just about coffee or hair or events. It's about creating a space where people feel like they belong. Where your story matters, where your Monday morning feels a little brighter, and where community isn't just a buzzword - it's what we do.
So, whether you're here for our famous iced lattes, need your curls refreshed, or just want to sit in a space that feels like home, welcome to our beautiful chaos. We're so glad you're here. So that's The
Story Behind Coterie: From Dream to Reality (Or How I Accidentally Created the Coziest Chaos in West Chester)
Come as you are, leave a little lighter.
With love and caffeine,
Ghiovanna 💕
P.S. - If you see me frantically running between the espresso machine and the salon chair, just wave. I promise I see you, I'm just living my best multitasking life.
